Following on from the announcement of the 2022 UCI Track Champions League Calendar, we will be delving deeper into each of the 4 locations hosting rounds this season. This week, we are starting with the very first location of the 2022 Track Champions League, Velòdrom Illes Balears, Palma, Mallorca, which will be welcoming the return of the hugely successful series.

Setting the bar high, the 2022 UCI Track Champions League will kick off in the 6,000 capacity multisport venue on November 12th. Originally opening in 2007, the velodrome is no stranger to high standards, having hosted the 2007 UCI Track Cycling World Championships as well as the international debut of the UCI Track Champions League in 2021.

Located in the cycling paradise of Mallorca, top professional cyclists and committed amateurs from all over the world choose the Balearic island as a training venue for its smooth roads, challenging climbs and breathtaking scenery. In addition, great world-class cyclists have been born in the Balearic Islands, such as the Olympians Joan Llaneras, Miguel Alzamora, Albert Torres and Sebastián David Muntaner.

The velodrome is among one of 14 designed by infamous German architect and indoor-cycling specialist, Ralph Schurmann and took two years to complete. Riders can expect a packed crowd, with Mallorca renowned for its cycling passion and exciting atmosphere.

Sebastián Mora, ProfessionaltSpanish track and road cyclist said: “I remember the atmosphere in the Velòdrom Illes Balears last year for the UCITrack Champions League – the audience was buzzing and I can’t wait to experience that again. Majorca is my second home – I really love racing in front of my home fans and am thrilled to be racing again this year, I feel the series really takes track cycling to another level.”

Francois Ribiero, Head of Discovery Sports Events, promoter of the UCI Track Champions League said: “The Velòdrom Illes Balears will once again bring together the world’s best track cyclists this year as we build on the spectacular debut for the series in 2021. Fans both live and watching on TV can expect a unique audio visual experience as we harness the venue’s top class facilities to bring the adrenaline and excitement of the series back for a second year. I look forward to seeing the Spanish crowds welcoming the riders, with the most intense racing schedule yet – it is sure to kick off with a bang”

The event has the institutional sponsorship from the Conselleria de Model Econòmic, Turisme i Treball del Govern Balear and from the Fundació Mallorca Turisme, and the collaboration of the Conselleria d’Afers Socials i Esports.
