Following the announcement of the 2022 UCI Track Champions League calendar, we’re delving deeper into the four locations that will be hosting the action this season. Looking at Round 2, you’ll see the Velodrom Berlin is a brand-new addition to the series.

Designed by award-winning French architect Dominique Perrault, this unique venue features a sunken track and boasts the largest steel roof in Europe. What’s more, it can accommodate up to 5,000 passionate fans for cycling events meaning the atmosphere is sure to be electric when the action takes place here on Saturday 19th November.

The Berlin Velodrom was completed in 1997 as part of the German capital’s bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games and has been home to world-class racing ever since. As well as being the venue for the iconic Berlin Six-Day Race, it has hosted the 1999 and 2020 editions of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Widely regarded as one of the fastest tracks in the world courtesy of its Siberian Pine panelling and 45 degree bends, we’re looking forward to seeing some spectacular speeds, and fans can expect records to be broken in what promises to be an intense round of action.

2021 UCI Track Champions League Women’s Sprint Champion Emma Hinze said: “The Berlin Velodrom reminds me of the three gold medals I won there at the 2020 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. The memories of achieving those victories in front of my home crowd still give me goosebumps, so it’s a venue that’s very close to me.

“I’m really looking forward to racing there again a hopefully I’ll have some friends in the crowd watching me on the night. That’s going to be a nice experience and it’ll give me even more motivation.”

UCI Track Champions League Ambassador Kristina Vogel said: “I love the Berlin Velodrom and am pleased to say I won a few gold medals there! It’s one of the world’s fastest tracks, with long straights and short, steep corners, and whenever I enter the arena I’m always amazed by the beauty of the roof construction. It really is an amazing venue.”

German Cycling Federation Communications Manager Christoph Kont said: “We are delighted to welcome the UCI Track Champions League to Berlin’s home of cycling. The new race format promises to be faster, more spectacular, and more entertaining than ever before.

“We can’t wait to see the riders flying around this iconic track at over 80 km/hr and the packed crowd will ensure the Velodrom is bouncing. See you in Berlin!”
